Electrical Infrared (IR) Imaging

Identify electrical problems before they become failures. Our infrared imaging inspections use thermal technology to detect abnormal heat in electrical equipment, helping locate potential issues that may not be visible during a standard inspection.

Scope of work

Six Things We Get Called For.

Electrical problems often generate excess heat before equipment fails. Infrared imaging allows us to inspect electrical systems while they are operating and identify areas that may require further investigation.

Electrical Panel Scanning

Thermal imaging of electrical panels to identify abnormal temperatures around breakers, connections and other components.

Loose Connection Detection

Locate heat patterns that may indicate loose, deteriorating or high-resistance electrical connections before they lead to equipment damage.

Overloaded Circuit Identification

Identify circuits and components operating at elevated temperatures that may be associated with excessive electrical loads.

Preventative Maintenance Inspections

Add infrared imaging to your preventative maintenance program to help identify developing electrical issues before they cause unexpected downtime.

Electrical Equipment Inspections

Inspect switchgear, disconnects, transformers, distribution equipment and other electrical components for unusual thermal patterns.

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

Use thermal imaging as a diagnostic tool when investigating electrical performance issues, recurring faults or unexplained equipment problems.

What’s Included

More Than a Thermal Image.

Infrared imaging is most useful when the results are properly interpreted. We combine thermal scanning with electrical knowledge to help determine what the temperature patterns may indicate and what should happen next.

Thermal Imaging

Electrical equipment scanned using infrared imaging technology.

Problem Identification

Potential hot spots and abnormal temperature patterns identified for further investigation.

Clear Findings

Straightforward information about what was observed during the inspection.

Recommended Next Steps

We explain what should be investigated, repaired or monitored.

What we do

Four Stages, In Order.

We inspect the electrical system under operating conditions, review the thermal patterns and identify areas that may require attention.

Stage 01

Site & System Review

We review the electrical equipment being inspected and discuss any known issues, maintenance concerns or problem areas before beginning the scan.

Stage 02

Infrared Inspection

Electrical panels and equipment are scanned using infrared imaging while operating under load where appropriate. We look for unusual temperature differences and concentrated hot spots.

Stage 03

Findings & Investigation

Any abnormal thermal patterns are reviewed to determine potential causes. Where appropriate, additional electrical testing or physical inspection may be recommended to confirm the issue.

Stage 04

Recommendations

We explain the findings and provide clear recommendations for any equipment that should be repaired, serviced, monitored or investigated further.

Common questions

Asked Before Most Inspections.

Infrared imaging can reveal developing electrical issues that may otherwise remain unnoticed until they cause equipment failure, downtime or other problems.

Infrared imaging can identify abnormal heat patterns that may be associated with loose connections, overloaded components, deteriorating equipment, unbalanced loads and other electrical issues.

Typically, electrical equipment is inspected while energized and operating because thermal differences are most useful when the system is under load. Safe access and operating conditions are assessed before the inspection.

No. Thermal cameras measure infrared radiation from visible surfaces. They do not see through walls or equipment, which is why electrical knowledge and proper interpretation of the images are important.

The appropriate frequency depends on the facility, equipment, operating conditions and maintenance requirements. Some commercial and industrial properties incorporate IR imaging into a recurring preventative maintenance program.
